This late 19th-century etching on paper is titled For God and the King. It is based on an original painting by Stanley Berkeley and was etched by A. P. Masse for publication in The Art Journal by J. S. Virtue and Co. Limited, London. The composition depicts a cavalry charge during the English Civil War, featuring soldiers in combat on horseback with a windmill visible on the distant horizon. A handwritten inscription on the cardboard verso identifies the scene as the Battle of Marston Moor in July 1644, involving Cavalier and Parliamentarian cavalry. The lower left margin is inscribed Painted by Stanley Berkeley, and the artist signature also appears within the lower left of the plate. The lower right margin is inscribed Etched by A. P. Masse. Centered below the image are the credits The Art Journal and the publisher imprint London: J. S. Virtue and Co Limited. The work displays a clear impression with fluid, acid-bitten lines characteristic of the etching technique. It is presented in a dark-finished frame with a silvered inner edge and a dark brown mat. Dimensions: Frame approx. H 12 1/8 inches x W 15 1/4 inches. Condition: The paper displays overall light toning consistent with age and several small spots of foxing, primarily located in the lower margin near the title. The frame shows minor surface wear, scuffs, and small areas of distress to the silvered finish. The etching appears to be in overall stable condition within its housing.
