Dark wool military-style forage cap featuring a brass infantry bugle insignia above a red felt cross-shaped emblem, brass numeral “1,” black leather visor, and narrow leather chinstrap secured by side buttons. A handwritten note identifies the cap as associated with the 1st New Jersey Volunteers and dated 1861; this attribution has not been independently verified. Visible condition includes dust, fabric wear, surface marks, tarnishing to the brass fittings, cracking and wear to the leather visor and strap, and age-related deterioration consistent with long-term storage. An intriguing historical military collectible with strong Civil War display appeal.
