After the painting of the restaurant in Bougival near Paris, originally exhibited in 1905 as an early example of French Fauvism, echoing the expressive brushwork, saturated primary colors, and structural forms popularized by artists like Maurice de Vlaminck, André Derain, and Henri Matisse. A self-taught painter, musician, and writer, Vlaminck was a principal figure of the early 20th-century French Fauvist movement alongside Henri Matisse and André Derain. Heavily influenced by Vincent van Gogh, his early works feature bold, unmodulated colors and intense brushwork.
