Big Top Peanut Butter Glass Tall

Big Top Peanut Butter glasses were promotional containers used in the 1940s and 1950s by W.T. Young Foods, Inc. Manufactured by the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, the decorative, Art Deco-style pressed glass jars were designed to be washed and reused as stylish household drinkware once the peanut butter was finished. The Origin & Evolution: The Big Top brand was launched in 1946. To incentivize purchases and compete in the crowded post-war market, the brand packaged its creamy spread in high-quality, reusable pressed-glass goblets and tumblers. Procter & Gamble acquired Big Top in the mid-1950s and rebranded it as Jif. The Manufacturer: The Hazel-Atlas Glass Company-one of the largest 20th-century American glassmakers-manufactured these jars. They featured intricate designs, beveled interiors to make scooping the last bit of peanut butter easier, and starburst motifs on the base. Design Variations: While the famous footed tumbler with geometric diamond and fan patterns is the most recognizable, Hazel-Atlas also produced shorter sherbet dishes, sundae cups, and a popular "Music Series" that featured printed Southern belles and classic song lyrics on the glass sides. Collectible Status: Because they were built to double as permanent household items, these vintage pieces survived in large numbers. Today, they are popular, nostalgic collectibles that represent the "golden age" of American promotional glass.
