This is a first in .22 caliber as a repeating rifle. It is a tube feed loader and features an octagon, bull barrel in extended length from the factory. It is able to be converted within to handle 22 long as well. The action is smooth and it is in good, shooting condition. The Winchester Model 1873 in .22 Short was America's first .22-caliber repeating rifle. Produced between 1884 and 1904, only about 19,500 were manufactured. Because of their scarcity and historical significance, these antique lever-actions are highly sought after by collectors, with prices typically ranging from $1,500 to well over $5,000 depending on condition.Original Model 1873s in this caliber feature:Unique Markings: The barrel is roll-stamped ".22 SHORT" near the breech, and the brass cartridge elevator is stamped ".22 CAL/SHORT".No Loading Gate: Unlike centerfire '73s, .22 versions do not have a loading gate on the receiver.Historical Use: They were primarily popular for small game hunting and gallery target shooting.Shooting and Collector Considerations
