9 7/8" by 11 7/8". Photo by Hazeltine's Studio. On January 15, 1895, a fire in Butte, Montana’s warehouse district ignited illegally stored dynamite, causing a series of massive explosions. The blasts destroyed several buildings and devastated surrounding blocks, killing at least 58 people including 13 firefighters and injuring many others. Known as the Great Butte Explosion or the Great Disaster of 1895, it remains one of the deadliest events in the city’s history.
