Title is Blackfoot Dance. 1953. 22" by 30" framed. Pencil on paper. Calvin Boy was a Piegan (Blackfeet) artist and illustrator from Montana best known for his foundational work on Plains Indian history. He is particularly celebrated for his accurate charcoal and pencil drawings of traditional Native American life, and his cultural contributions to Montana's Native communities.. Historical Illustration: He provided the illustrations for John C. Ewers' seminal 1955 ethnological text, The Horse in Blackfoot Indian Culture. Boy worked directly alongside tribal elders to ensure his sketches were historically and culturally accurate before making the final drawings. Buffalo Jump: His charcoal-on-canvas-board drawing titled "Buffalo Jump" visually documented historical bison hunting methods. His pieces have also been featured in exhibits at the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana Cultural Preservation: In addition to visual art, Boy was deeply connected to tribal traditions and held the rights to paint traditional Blackfeet lodges. His vocal performances of traditional Blackfeet songs (including lullabies and grass dance songs) are documented on the Smithsonian Institution's An Historical Album of Blackfoot Indian Music.
