Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). Depicting a coastal village with red- and yellow-roofed houses set among dense greenery, opening toward a calm expanse of water with several white sailboats and distant mountains rendered in layered tones of green, blue, and ochre, the composition reflects Cézanne’s post-Impressionist structure, defined by modulated color, faceted brushwork, and the reduction of natural forms into geometric masses. Signed P. Cézanne at the lower right. Label on verso of Pierre Matisse Gallery. 81.2 x 50.8 cm (32" x 20"), framed: 101.6 x 71 cm (40" x 28"). The emphasis on constructed landscape planes, rhythmic foliage, and balanced spatial recession aligns with themes present in Cézanne’s mature landscapes, where he sought to reveal the underlying architecture of nature. Comparable works featuring Mediterranean villages, terraced hillsides, and structured color fields appear in major institutional collections, including the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Courtauld Gallery in London.
