Oil on canvas, framed. Attributed to Frida Kahlo (1907–1954). Depicting a frontal figure dressed in a red-orange traditional garment with a patterned sash, adorned with flowers in the hair and accompanied by a small monkey at the shoulder, set before dense green tropical foliage with a glimpse of blue sky, the composition reflects Kahlo’s mature symbolic vocabulary, defined by intimate self-presentation, saturated color, and the integration of animals as personal, cultural, and emotional emblems. Signed Frida Kahlo at the upper right. 61 x 40.6 cm (24" x 16"), framed: 76 x 57 cm (30" x 22.5"). The work aligns with themes central to her late 1930s–1940s production, where she frequently employed bust-length or full-figure formats, lush vegetal settings, and companion creatures to articulate identity, psychological states, and Mexican iconography. Comparable portraits featuring monkeys, tropical foliage, and similarly stylized physiognomy appear in the Museo Dolores Olmedo, the Museo Frida Kahlo, the Museum of Modern Art, the Harry Ransom Center, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, each holding works that demonstrate similar symbolic structure, chromatic intensity, and intimate psychological focus.
