Shell Australia Service Station Bench, with its original embossed front c. 1920s - 1930s. A scarce and significant piece of early Australian Shell advertising. The front of the bench is all one piece. A pressed metal (embossed) panel with rolled edges, with embossed Shell Clams & lettering and with a pressed raised centre surround section, designed to house interchangeable signs, as they were updated over time. The bench top & frame is also original, and the rear of the bench is stencilled "the shell co. of Aust" and "N.S.W." The "Table of Recommendations" sign (J.T. Picken & Sons Pty Ltd, Melbourne) has been added by the vendor to compliment the bench. It is not represented as being original to this bench. A desirable Shell sign in its own right and in this condition. Believed to have been supplied to a Shell service station as a work and display bench for Shell lubricants and accessories, although exhibition or promotional use has also been suggested. we have not encountered another example as complete as this one. Sign 860 Bench 1800 W X 430 D X
