A 19th-century Italian Grand Tour patinated bronze equestrian sculpture depicting the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. This reduction is modelled after the ancient Roman original located on the Capitoline Hill in Rome. The Emperor is shown dressed in a tunica and pallium, with his right arm raised in a gesture of address. He is seated upon a horse with its right foreleg raised. The figure is a separate casting from the horse, with visible filler at the join. The bronze is mounted onto a rectangular, variegated red and green marble plinth. A small rectangular stamp is present on the horse's right shoulder, although the characters are not legible. Dimensions: approx. H 21 cm x L 14.6 cm x W 7 cm (measured against a visible tape measure). Condition: The bronze displays an aged patina with notable verdigris oxidisation in the recessed areas. There is visible silver-coloured solder or filler at the interface between the rider and the horse. The marble base has small chips and nibbles along the edges. A rusted hex nut and bolt are visible on the underside.
