Artist: Georges (George) Chavignaud, OSA, ALCT, CSPWC (1865–1944) Title: Untitled Cottage Landscape Medium: Watercolour on paper Signature: Signed lower right "G. Chavignaud" Sight Size: Approximately 8 × 10 in. (visible) Frame Size: Approximately 14 × 16 in. A delicate original watercolour by noted Canadian artist Georges Chavignaud, depicting a cottage nestled among mature trees in a lush woodland setting. Executed in a restrained palette of soft blues and warm earth tones, the composition demonstrates the artist's characteristic sensitivity to atmosphere and light. Loose, impressionistic brushwork creates a tranquil rural scene that exemplifies Chavignaud's poetic interpretation of the Canadian landscape. Works by Chavignaud are well regarded for their lyrical handling of watercolour and remain sought after by collectors of early Canadian art. This intimate landscape is representative of the artist's mature style and decorative appeal. Artist Biography: Georges (George) Chavignaud (1865–1944) was a French-born Canadian painter, educator, and one of Canada's accomplished early twentieth-century watercolourists. Born in Lanvéoc, Brittany, France, he immigrated to Canada in 1884 before returning to Europe for formal studies in Brussels, Paris, and Antwerp. His work reflects the influence of French Impressionism and the Barbizon tradition while developing a distinctly Canadian sensitivity to landscape. Chavignaud served as Principal of the Victoria School of Art and Design in Halifax from 1912 to 1916 and was an active member of the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA), the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC), and a frequent exhibitor with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). His paintings depict landscapes, village scenes, marine subjects, and portraits, and are represented in major public collections including the National Gallery of Canada
