itle Untitled Abstract Composition Medium Oil on Canvas Dimensions 31 × 23 inches (78.7 × 58.4 cm) Date Circa 1960s Condition Good overall condition. The painting displays strong color retention with expressive impasto and confident brushwork. Minor surface wear consistent with age and careful handling. The canvas remains structurally stable and presents exceptionally well. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. Provenance From the private collection of William Hartford, Greenwich, Connecticut; later acquired through Galerie Moderne Internationale, Paris, France; subsequently included in an important Palm Beach, Florida collection of Post-War American paintings before entering the present secondary market collection. Description This vibrant abstract composition is executed with energetic layers of bold yellow, crimson, magenta, emerald green, cobalt blue, black, and gray brushstrokes scattered across a bright white ground. The spontaneous movement, expressive palette, and richly textured surface create a dynamic sense of rhythm and visual energy while emphasizing gesture, color, and freedom of expression. Attributed to Joan Mitchell (1925–1992), this work displays many of the stylistic characteristics associated with the artist's celebrated Abstract Expressionist paintings, including vigorous brushwork, layered color relationships, and an intuitive sense of movement. The composition reflects the expressive visual language that established Mitchell as one of the most significant figures of Post-War American abstraction.
