Title Mahoning Medium Oil on Paper Dimensions 17 × 13 inches (43.2 × 33 cm) Date Circa 1950s Condition Good overall condition. Surface presents stable pigment application with bold gestural brushwork and strong tonal contrasts throughout. Minor wear consistent with age and handling. The paper remains structurally sound and display-ready. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. Provenance From the private collection of Jonathan Mercer, Baltimore, Maryland; later acquired through Ashford Contemporary Gallery, London, England; subsequently held in an important private collection in Toronto, Canada, before entering the present collection. Description This powerful abstract composition is executed in oil on paper and features bold gestural brushwork, sweeping black forms, and a dynamic network of intersecting structural lines set against a warm neutral ground. The restrained palette and energetic application of paint create a compelling balance of movement and architectural rhythm, reflecting the expressive language of post-war American abstraction. Attributed to Franz Kline (1910–1962), this work displays many of the stylistic characteristics associated with the artist's celebrated Abstract Expressionist compositions, including vigorous brushwork, dramatic tonal contrast, and monumental linear forms. The composition captures the visual intensity and structural energy that established Kline as one of the defining figures of the New York School.Condition Report:This artwork is offered as attributed to the artist referenced in the title.
