London: Printed for A. Bell [et al], 1716. 8vo, 2 vol. set, with engraved portrait frontis to first volume. Period calf bindings broken. Both title pages bear the ownership signature Princess Elizabeth (1770–1840), daughter of King George III; first volume with an early inscription on the front pastedown further recording the set as originating from her library. Princess Elizabeth, the seventh child and third daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte, was known for her intellectual interests and maintained a well-regarded personal library. The present is a substantial history of the reign of Charles I and the English Civil War. Drawing upon private memoirs and documentary sources while comparing its narrative with the works of Clarendon and Rushworth, the author sought to provide a more comprehensive and impartial account of the political and military conflicts that culminated in the execution of Charles I. Condition: Boards detached, heavily worn; contents with some typical foxing. Sold as-is.
