A large 19th Century Chinese shallow bowl with a hand-painted phoenix and peony garden scene. The drawing is crisp and experienced. The large hand thrown porcelain bowl has been glazed with a thick bluish glaze and painted in a cobalt design. The underside is decorated with bamboo sprigs. The glaze feels very soft and unctuous. The shallow, rounded, unglazed foot shows the white clay. The base is marked with a Chinese character within a double lined box. MEASUREMENTS 9 ¾" (24.8 cm) diameter x 1 7/8" (4.8 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 10.2 oz (745 g) CONDITION There are no breaks, chips, cracks, or repairs. The central well shows slight wear. The bowl has kiln flaws, such as black spots, pimples, and bumps. There is also some discoloration to the white glaze on the underside due to uneven heat during firing. A great blue and white plate to add to a display or use to put fruit in. Period: Late 19th Century Origin: China Materials: Porcelain Dimensions: 9.75"W × 9.75"D × 7.88"H
