Massive Pinctada maxima, or giant pearl oyster shell, measures approximately 11" by 11.5" and is 4.5" thick, weighing a total of 9.15 pounds. This size reaches the upper limits of this genus, very close to the largest known specimen found. Highly glossy, iridescent mother-of-pearl (nacre) lining on top and bottom, visible adductor muscle scars, and thick bryozoan outer crust. Please see photos.
