The 1901-S $5 Gold Liberty coin is part of the Liberty Head Half Eagle series (1839-1908), designed by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. The obverse features a left-facing Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars, with the date 1901 below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D.
