This late 19th-century etching on paper titled ‘The Haymaker’ depicts a young peasant woman resting with a rake before a haystack. The work features a remarque of a goat in the lower margin and is signed in the plate as L. Emile Adan. It bears hand-signed pencil signatures by the artist Louis-Emile Adan and the engraver Charles de Billy. The upper margin is marked PUBLIE PAR GEORGES PETIT, 12, RUE GODOT DE MAUROY, PARIS, OCTOBRE 1890. A small KL stamp appears in the lower-left margin. The piece is housed in a period mahogany-finish frame. The paper exhibits significant age-toning and darkening at the edges. Foxing and staining are visible in the lower margin and around the remarque. The frame shows minor surface scuffing and wear.
