Anthropomorphic Sailor Monkey cookie jar Chimp

Updated October 23, 2026

anthropomorphic "Sailor Monkey" cookie jar (often referred to by collectors as the "Sailor Chimp"), originally manufactured in Japan during the 1950s. This highly collectible mid-century piece features a glossy brown monkey or chimpanzee character with large blue eyes and a sculpted red bow tie. The monkey is depicted holding a yellow donut in his right hand and a pink Easter egg or sweet treat in his left hand. His crisp white sailor cap, complete with a prominent hand-painted black anchor on the front, serves as the removable lid. Turning the piece over typically reveals a simple underglaze stamped or incised "JAPAN" mark on the base.
