Hand-Colored Theater Etching. An original mid-nineteenth-century hand-colored theatrical etching depicting H. Marston as Marc Antony in Julius Caesar. Roman costume and dramatic gesture connect this image to the nineteenth-century fascination with historically staged Shakespeare. A Roman statesman in white toga with vivid red-striped border stands beside a stone monument bearing Roman lettering. The composition is presented on a cream paper sheet measuring 10 x 12 inches overall; image dimensions have not been provided. Printed label names H. Marston as Marc Antony. Visible condition: Light yellowing with faint handling spots and remnants on the reverse. Review all supplied photographs for paper margins, lettering and details. This is a period printed etching with hand-applied color rather than a one-of-a-kind painted portrait; individual impressions can vary in coloring.
