Hand-Colored Shakespeare Etching. An original hand-colored theatrical etching portraying Herbert Beerbohm Tree as Richard II in Richard II; the performer’s documented stage career places the subject in the late Victorian or Edwardian period. Tree became a major London actor-manager toward the end of the nineteenth century and into the Edwardian era. A richly dressed, crowned king sits in vivid blue robes with ermine trim, a bright red mantle and heraldic accents. The composition is presented on a cream paper sheet measuring 10 x 12 inches overall; image dimensions have not been provided. Tree did not play Richard II until 1903; cannot be mid-19th century. Visible condition: Cream mount toned, with mild foxing and dark small marks near the upper margin. Review all supplied photographs for paper margins, lettering and details. Because Tree first portrayed Richard II in 1903, the period of this etching is necessarily 1903 or later if the identification is correct.
