Vintage paperback anthology titled Existentialism, edited by philosopher Robert C. Solomon and published as part of the Modern Library College Editions series. The number printed on the back, 394-31704-1, corresponds to ISBN 0-394-31704-1 / 9780394317045. This edition dates to 1974. A college-level collection of important writings associated with existentialist philosophy and literature. The anthology brings together selections from major thinkers and writers including Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Martin Heidegger, Karl Jaspers, Franz Kafka, Jean-Paul Sartre, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Simone de Beauvoir, Martin Buber, Paul Tillich, Samuel Beckett, and others. The readings explore central existentialist concerns such as freedom and personal responsibility, individuality, choice, anxiety, meaning, authenticity, alienation, human relationships, morality, and the individual's confrontation with an uncertain or seemingly absurd world. It is designed as an academic introduction and sourcebook rather than a single-author explanation of existentialism. Fair vintage used condition. The paperback shows substantial age and reading wear. The cream-colored covers have noticeable discoloration, age toning, staining/soiling and surface marks. The blue front panel has rubbing, scratches and scuffing, with pronounced wear along the spine and cover edges. Corners are bumped, creased and worn, including a significant crease at the lower front corner. The page block is heavily age-toned/yellowed, with discoloration along the edges. The book also shows some curvature and wear consistent with repeated reading and storage. The spine remains attached, although it shows considerable rubbing and deterioration and at least 1 loose page.
