Pair of original Expressionist mixed media paintings by German artist Thomas Schindler, executed in pencil, charcoal, and watercolor on paper in 1984. Both compositions depict theatrical figures wearing elaborate harlequin costumes and jester hats, rendered with bold black outlines, angular forms, and expressive brushwork against warm ochre backgrounds. One depicts a seated harlequin holding a theatrical mask, while the other portrays a solitary costumed figure in a dramatic architectural setting. The works combine elements of Expressionism and Cubism, with a distinctive palette of black, white, green, blue, and yellow. Both signed Schindler and dated 1984. Retain original Sander Gallery, New York, and Viart Corporation labels on the verso. Professionally framed and matted in matching wooden frames. Good overall condition with minor age-related wear to frames. Each measures 34 1/2" x 27" framed. Thomas Schindler (born 1959) is a German contemporary artist known for his expressive figurative paintings incorporating elements of Surrealism, Expressionism, and metaphysical art. Born in Braunschweig, Germany, he studied painting at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts from 1978 to 1983 under Hermann Albert and Peter Voigt. His work frequently explores theatrical figures, enigmatic characters, and imaginative compositions with bold colors and dramatic contrasts. Schindler has exhibited internationally, including in New York, Berlin, Paris, Milan, and San Francisco, and his works have appeared at major auction houses, including Christie's and Sotheby's.
