Artist Biography Lawrence Arthur Colley Panton was a distinguished Canadian painter, designer, and educator whose career contributed significantly to the development of Canadian art during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Egremont, Cheshire, England, in 1894, Panton immigrated to Canada in 1911 and settled in Toronto. Following military service during the First World War, he pursued artistic training through evening classes at the Ontario College of Art, studying under established Canadian artists C. M. Manly and Frederick S. Challener. He also attended classes at Toronto's Central Technical School before working as a commercial designer with the printing firm Rous and Mann. Panton developed a distinctive approach to Canadian landscape painting, combining traditional representational techniques with the expressive colour and simplified forms associated with Canadian modernism. His landscapes frequently explored wooded settings, rural Ontario, atmospheric effects, and seasonal transitions. Although influenced by the broader movement toward a distinctly Canadian landscape tradition, Panton developed an individual style characterized by strong composition, expressive brushwork, and a sophisticated understanding of colour. Panton was also an influential art educator. His teaching career included positions at Central Technical School, Western Technical School, and Northern Vocational School in Toronto. In 1951, he became Principal of the Ontario College of Art, a position he held until his death in 1954. His contributions as both an artist and educator established him as an important figure in Canadian art history.
