Provenance: The Isaacs Gallery Ltd., Toronto, original gallery label verso identifying the work as Two Flowers, Oil, 1972, John MacGregor. A lively early floral composition by Canadian painter and sculptor John MacGregor, featuring two boldly rendered blossoms against a softly worked pink, white and pale-blue ground. Broad, spontaneous brushwork and vivid passages of blue, yellow, green and red give the composition an energetic balance between recognizable floral imagery and abstraction. Artist Biography John MacGregor was born in Dorking, England in 1944 and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1948. He studied at Toronto's Central Technical School and held his first solo exhibition at Hart House Gallery in 1967. From 1968 until 1987 he was represented by the influential Isaacs Gallery in Toronto, becoming associated with the circle of artists surrounding dealer Avrom Isaacs. MacGregor worked across painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. His early works often transformed familiar objects and recognizable subjects through playful and provocative imagery, while by the mid-1970s his painting increasingly incorporated highly saturated abstraction. His works are represented in major Canadian public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, Vancouver Art Gallery, Winnipeg Art Gallery and Museum London.
