Carlos in Clavigo. Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862–1918) Oil on canvas depicting the actor Josef Lewinsky in the role of Carlos in Goethe’s “Clavigo,” standing formally against a dark central field and surrounded by decorative panels, floral motifs, theatrical figures, and gold-colored ornamental details. The elongated vertical composition combines portraiture with symbolic and decorative elements, reflecting the richly ornamental visual language associated with Klimt’s work. Inscribed across the upper section “JOSEF LEWINSKY ALS CARLOS IN CLAVIGO.” Signed “Gustav Klimt” lower center. Framed. The verso bears several gallery and collection-style labels and stamps, including labels referring to Robert Schiedelkopf Gallery, The Lefevre Gallery, London, and Berner Kunstmuseum, together with additional handwritten and stamped markings. These markings are noted as present on the work and are not independently authenticated. Gustav Klimt was an Austrian Symbolist painter and a leading figure of the Vienna Secession. His work is renowned for its combination of portraiture, symbolism, elaborate ornament, decorative pattern, and gold-toned elements, which became defining characteristics of his distinctive artistic style. DIMENSIONS Unframed: 35 1/2 x 23 1/2 in. Framed: 39 3/4 x 28 in. PROVENANCE Private collection.
