From the auction house
Leo Hodroff began his journey into Chinese export porcelain in the mid-20th century, a pursuit that evolved into a lifelong commitment to acquiring works of extraordinary rarity and quality. Alongside his wife, Doris, he assembled what would become the world?s preeminent private collection of Chinese export porcelain. Their passion for collecting was matched only by their dedication to public enrichment. The Hodroffs shared their treasures generously, establishing dedicated galleries at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Winterthur Museum, Norton Museum, and the Mayo Clinic. Their legacy is further immortalized in scholarship through David S. Howard?s definitive volumes, ?The Choice of the Private Trader? and ?Made in China.? In a poetic sense, the Hodroffs' curation mirrored the historic maritime trade between East and West. As Howard observed, ?The taste of Leo and Doris Hodroff in choosing the pieces in their collection from auction houses and antique shops of the Western world closely mirrors the tastes of the East India supercargoes who two centuries earlier faced a similar choice in the shops of Canton.? Revere Auctions is honored to present this spectacular sale of Chinese export porcelain from the Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff. In keeping with the family?s spirit of generosity, proceeds from this auction will benefit the University of Minnesota.
