This August, Alexandra Howard Inc., based in New York, returns with a wide-ranging decorative sale of 295 lots, gathered with a designer's eye and spanning continents, centuries, and a healthy sense of the unexpected. The catalog is anchored by a strong group of Asian antiques, among them a pair of large Chinese polychrome Tang Dynasty horses, an inlaid eight-panel Chinese porcelain table screen, a vintage red coromandel four-panel screen, and a pair of antique Chinese cloisonn? vases on carved rosewood stands. European decorative arts are equally well represented, from a pair of Maison Baccarat Japonisme ormolu-mounted double vases and a set of twelve Salviati Venetian amethyst compotes with gold-leaf inclusions to a set of Regency dining chairs upholstered in Scalamandr? mohair. Garden and statuary lovers will find antique French and English stone pieces, a pair of verdigris bronze garden cranes, and a more whimsical cast that includes a stone hippo, garden snails, and a rare ladybug bootscraper. Rounding out the sale are fine rugs and textiles, lighting, mirrors, designer accessories, and the occasional curiosity, including a rare ruby glass rooster decanter and a Brazilian piranha preserved in glass.
