Known throughout the New York City art world as a talented and respected art conservator and painter, Simon Parkes was also an avid art collector who amassed a sizable collection of paintings and drawings by American and European artists, many of whom were friends and colleagues. Parkes? aesthetic point of view can be seen throughout the collection with a focus on small landscape and still life works by Robert Kulicke, Fairfield Porter, and Andrew Cranston hanging alongside contemporary abstract works by Mercedes Matter, Michael Gross and Stanley Boxer. Parkes? own painting practice focused on the landscapes of places he loved, choosing subject matter that was personal and evoked a deep love of nature. Included in the sale is a selection of works by Parkes that represent the subjects and places he loved to paint: East Hampton, Nantucket, Maine, Capri, and the Napa Valley.
