A celebration of the life and career of one of Thailand's most prolific filmmakers, Sompote Sands, and the 60th anniversary of one of Asia's most beloved pop culture icons, Ultraman. Julien's Auctions is proud to present Kaiju King: The Sompote Sands Legacy Collection. This collection features over 300 items from the personal estate of Sompote Sands, one of the most legendary filmmakers from Thailand. Sands got his start in the film industry working as a production assistant for masters of Japanese cinema, Akira Kurosawa and Eiji Tsuburaya, including being on set for such iconic films as the celebrated High and Low (Toho, 1963) and the kaiju classic King Kong vs. Godzilla (Toho, 1962). Eventually, he created his own production company in Thailand, Chaiyo Productions, and made his feature film directorial debut in 1972 with Chalawan, an adaptation of a classic Thai folktale about a magical being who could transform between a human being and a crocodile. This would be just the beginning of Sands fascination with depicting reptiles on-screen and would make several more films about the scaley beasts, including further adaptations of the same Thai folktale, Krai Thong (1980) and Krai Thong 2 (1985), as well as Crocodile Therakwad (1982), Magic Lizard (1985), and Crocodile (1979), which was a crossover hit in the United States and has maintained as a creature feature cult favorite to this day. In 1974, Chaiyo Productions collaborated with Tsuburaya Productions on the first, original, feature-length film featuring the beloved superhero, Ultraman, entitled Hanuman and the Seven Ultramen. First debuting with the 1966 series Ultra Q and then his own series, Ultraman, the same year, the alien superhero, Ultraman, had become a sensation with multiple television installments already released by that time.
