This exceptional multi-century collection presents one of the most diverse offerings of Japanese woodblock art to appear at auction this season. Spanning the 18th through 20th centuries, the catalog includes original ukiyo-e prints, rare surimono, shin-hanga masterpieces, sumi-e paintings, and several 19th-century hanga woodblock plates used in traditional printing. Highlights include Edo-period works by Hiroshige, such as Fujieda, Totsuka, Moon at Ryogoku Bridge, and Autumn Moon at Seto, alongside actor portraits by Kunisada, Kuniyoshi, Toyokuni III, and Kunichika. The collection also features refined surimono by Yashima Gakutei, including Six Superior Men of Reiraka, Three Chinese Excellents, and multiple courtesan-themed compositions. Shin-hanga collectors will find outstanding works by Kawase Hasui, including Rain at Ominato, The Nikko Highway, Evening Snow at Edogawa River, and Morning in Pyongyang. Additional modern highlights include Kiyoshi Saito’s Child of Aizu and Winter in Aizu, Jun’ichiro Sekino’s charming postwar prints, and an extensive group of Yozo Hamaguchi mezzotints such as Twenty-Two Cherries, Deux Cocons, Three Butterflies, and Deux Citrons et Bouteille. The auction also includes original sumi-e paintings, serene landscapes by Ohara Koson, atmospheric scenes by Tsuchiya Koitsu, and equine studies by Yoshijiro Urushibara. Several double-sided 19th-century hanga plates depicting Buddhist deities and kabuki actors add a rare glimpse into the physical craft of woodblock production. This curated offering provides collectors, scholars, and enthusiasts an opportunity to acquire works representing the full evolution of Japanese printmaking—from Edo-period elegance to modern artistic innovation.
